Greeley Man Killed In Head-On Crash

LACKAWAXEN — A Greeley man was killed last Friday night when his car crashed head-on into a second vehicle after crossing the double yellow line on Long Ridge Road in Lackawaxen.
Police said Lee C. Holbert, 48, of Greeley, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:15 p.m. Aug. 14. Investigator Sean Colley of PSP Blooming Grove said the driver of the second vehicle, John Lubey of Hawley, sustained suspected injuries but refused transport.
Holbert was traveling south in a Hyundai Elantra and veered into the northbound lane, striking Lubey's Buick Le Sabre. Both vehicles sustained severe damage.
Forest Fire Dept., Hawley Fire Dept. and Police Dept. and Tafton EMS assisted at the scene.

Twp. Opposes 434 Roundabout

LACKAWAXEN — Township Supervisors are opposed to a potential PennDOT project to place a roundabout at the 434 and Route 6 intersection.
The Township is sending a letter to PennDOT outlining their opposition as they feel a roundabout is not the best option for the intersection and could be a danger especially at night. Roundabouts are not common around this area and could cause problems if encountered late at night or if there was an obstruction in the road considering the speed of vehicles traveling that section of road.
The Supervisors approved a request by a representative of Tink Wig who asked the Township for a letter of support so they can apply for an LSA grant to replace a bridge on Clubhouse Drive.
Growing Lackawaxen, a community outreach group, is asking permission to use Veterans Park on September 5th for their AREA 590 - Aliens in the Park Spaceship Auction. The event will include "Live Auction, surprise special guest appearance for the kids, UFO cookie painting, social-distancing kid's games, and Music provided by DJ Spaide." The event will be held from 12-3 and will include food and "safe-distancing."
There will be two conditional use hearings held on September 10th: the first hearing will be held at 9 a.m. for Fawn Lake, which is seeking permission to build a dog park.
The second hearing is for Masthope Property Owners Association requesting an expansion to their pool. That hearing will be held at 9:15 am.
Lackawaxen will be trading in old equipment to purchase two Chevy Silverado utility trucks with a dump and a plow each for $93,542 before trade-in value. The Township has already sold two trucks and a paver.

Gift Certificates For
Fire Dept. Members

MILFORD — Supervisors in Milford Township are finalizing their plans for a certificate presentation on behalf of the Milford Fire Department.
The supervisors held their latest meeting this past Monday night via Zoom, spending part of the time discussing their plans for presenting certificates of appreciation to the Milford Fire Department. Among a new addition to their plan, the supervisors have decided to give a select group of older and more experienced volunteers gift certificates for all their years of service to the community.
"I am waiting for a word back on whether they would like a personal handoff, a delivery to the firehouse or whether they would like us to put everything in the mail," said Supervisor Rachel Hendricks. "When they get everything, they are going to try to do some collaboration and celebration that they'll share on their social media pages."
The supervisors have donated their pay to help cover various items that they will be giving to EMS volunteers. Among the gift certificates, all of EMS volunteers were given T-Shirts reading "Milford Strong." At the meeting, Supervisor Gary Williams stated that he would like to donate an extra $100 to increase the amount of money they are giving to these volunteers.
"I would like to donate $100 tonight," said Williams.
The presentation comes as one of many activities being done to celebrate EMS volunteers during the month of August. Back on the July 20 supervisor meeting, the supervisors adopted a proclamation that designated the month of August 2020 as Emergency Medical Services month.
At their August 3 meeting, the supervisors nominated a local Fire and EMS volunteer named Charlie Drummond for a new program that honors public service volunteers in smaller municipalities throughout the United States. He is also among the volunteers being awarded a gift certificate.
Twelve members of the Milford Fire Department will receive gift certificates to businesses in the area. At the meeting, the supervisors read off the years of service for each member who was being awarded with a gift certificate. All told, the men have a combined total of 224 years of service through their volunteerism with the fire department.
"I thank them very much," said Supervisor Penney Luhrs. "Between them all that is a lot of years. I don't think I could have ever done anything like that."
